Dr. Essam Abdulaziz Al Shail is a neurosurgeon, medical doctor, and Distinguished Fellow of New Westminster College. He earned a MBBS in Medical and Health Sciences in 1987 from the Medical School at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He completed his MD Neurological Surgery Residency Training Program from 1988 to 1995 at the King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Al Shail completed his Clinical Fellowship at the Division of Neurosurgery, Hospital for Sick Children from University of Toronto from July 1995 to June 1997. He also completed his Clinical Fellowship at the Craniofacial Program at the Division of Plastic Surgery, Hospital for Sick Children from University of Toronto from July 1997 to June 1998. Dr. Wu is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology, Anatomy & Neurobiology, and Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research. Her areas of expertise include neuroinflammation, neuroprotection, neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury (SCI). She obtained her PhD from Nanjing Medical University, China and Post-Doctoral Training at NIH, USA. She joined the Georgetown University faculty in 2007 and then moved to University of Maryland where she rose to the rank of Associate Professor. Her ongoing NIH-funded research is directed at the understanding the cellular and molecular mechanism of functional recovery after SCI and developing potentially therapeutic strategies.

Anatoly Uzdensky has completed his PhD at 1980 from Rostov State University (Russia). He is the principal investigator and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology in the Sothern Federal University (Rostov-on-Don, Russia). He has published more than 120 papers in reputed journals.

Dr. Rosi is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science and Neurological Surgery; she is also the Director of Neurocognitive Research in the Brain and Spinal Injury Center (BASIC). Her areas of expertise include neuroinflammation, brain injury and cognitive functions. She obtained her PhD from the University of Florence, Italy. After completing a short Post-Doctoral Training in Italy she moved to the University of Arizona for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the Neural System Memory and Aging Center under the guidance of Drs. Carol Barnes and Gary Wenk. She joined the UCSF faculty in 2006 and she received an accelerated promotion to Associate Professor in 2011 and became Director of Neurocognitive Research. She has been able to build national and international recognition in the field of Neuroscience, and among her numerous achievements she recently received the Bridging the Gap Award from the California Institute for Quantitative Bioscience (2015) and was chosen to give the 2015 Discovery Talk at the upcoming UCSF Alumni Weekend.

John Rothrock, MD is the Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurology and professor of neurology at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences. Dr. Rothrock received his medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed his internship and residency training in Neurology at the University of Arizona.From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Rothrock joined The University of Nevada (Reno) School of Medicine and was appointed chair of the department of Neurology and director of the Institute for the Neurosciences at Renown Regional Medical Center, the medical school’s primary teaching hospital.

Armagan Kocer received her M.Sc. (1995) and Ph.D. (2000) in biology from the Middle East Technical University (www.metu.edu.tr), Ankara, Turkey. A part of her Ph.D. work was conducted at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. George Robillard. In 2001 she joined the BioMade Technology Foundation in Groningen and worked as a researcher and later as a senior scientist. At the end of 2007, she received two prestigious personal grants from the Innovation of the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO Vidi) and the European Research Council ERC Starting Grant. With these grants, she launched her research group at the University of Groningen. In 2014, she moved her research group at the University Medical Center Groningen. In 2012 and 2013 she received two or ERC Proof of Concept grants to develop transport medicine and biosensor technologies.

Tatia M C Lee is Associate Dean (Postgraduate Education) of Social Sciences and May Professor in Neuropsychology at The University of Hong Kong. She is an elected Fellow of American Psychological Association (both in Society of Clinical Psychology [Division 12] and the Division of Clinical Neuropsychology [Division 40]). She is the founding Director of Institute of Clinical Neuropsychology in Hong Kong, and the Laboratory of Neuropsychology and Laboratory of Cognitive Affective Neuroscience at The University of Hong Kong. She is the Director of the doctoral programmes in Clinical Psychology at The University of Hong Kong. Tatia Lee has been working in collaboration with clinicians and scientists to unravel the magic power of the human brain, to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying those cognitive affective processes that define the human nature of an individual. She has published extensively and in high impact journals, including Molecular Psychiatry of Nature Publishing Group. Neuroplasticity and neuro-cognitive recovery from brain pathologies,Neural mechanisms underlying social cognitive affective functions and response regulation

Professor Wu received his medical degree in Sun YatSen University of Medical Sciences, Guangdong, China in 1975 and a Master Degree in Neuroanatomy in the same institute in 1981. He was a clinician and later a teacher for medical students for more 10 years in Mainland China and went to US for his oversea study and work. Prof. Wu received his PhD degree in Neuroscience in 1991 and continued to work in Eastern Virginia Medical School till 1996. Prof Wu joined the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong in Jan. 1996 as an assistant professor, promoted to associate professor in 1997 and professor in 2008. Prof Wu ’s research is well recognized. His contributions include: 1 A total of over 100 original peer review articles with more than 2000 citations received; 2 Initiation of 14 active international and local collaborative studies with a few of outstanding research groups Centers; 3 A total of 29 research grants 23 as principal investigator and 6 as coinvestigator with total of over HK 20 millions awarded; 4 More than 40 invited lectures, visiting professorship.

Injury

After completing his Ph.D. in neuropharmacology from the Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences and a post-doctoral fellowship at Cornell University Medical College, he joined the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor of Pharmacology with tenure. Having developed a strong interest in drug discovery and development, he moved to the The Upjohn Company where he initiated and led an effort over many years to discover agents for the treatment of traumatic brain and spinal cord injury and stroke. He played a leading role in the discovery and development of high dose methylprednisolone therapy for acute spinal cord injury. In addition, Dr. Hall was co-discoverer of the 21-aminosteroids (“lazaroids”) including tirilazad mesylate which was the subject of phase III clinical trials and was approved for the treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in several European and Australasian countries. For this work, he received the Fred Kagan Lead-Finding Award for Outstanding Achievement in Discovery Research, the Upjohn Achievement in Science and Medicine Award and was elected to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association SCI Hall of Fame. After 15 years, Dr. Hall left Upjohn and joined Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical Research which is now part of Pfizer Global Research and Development (PGRD). In 2001, he was appointed Senior Director, CNS Pharmacology at PGRD-Ann Arbor. In July, 2002, he returned to academia at the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he was Director of the Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC) for the next 10 years. Dr. Hall is an authority on the pathophysiology of acute neurological injury, particularly the role of reactive oxygen mechanisms, and the design and development of antioxidant neuroprotective drugs. His ongoing NIH-funded research is directed at the discovery of novel neuroprotective pharmacological strategies for acute neurotrauma.

Prof. Dr. Radu Mutihac is Chair of Medical Physics Section, University of Bucharest, and works in Neuroscience, Signal Processing, Microelectronics, and Artificial Intelligence. As postdoc/research associate/visiting professor/full professor he run his research at the University of Bucharest, International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Italy), Ecole Polytechnique (France), Institut Henri Poincare (France), KU Leuven (Belgium). Data mining and exploratory analysis of neuroimaging time series were addressed during two Fulbright Grants in Neuroscience (Yale University and University of New Mexico). His research in fused biomedical imaging modalities was carried out at the Johns Hopkins University, National Institutes of Health, and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, MD, USA. Prof. R. Mutihac is member of the ISMRM, ESMRMB, OHBM, Romanian US Alumni Association, and fellow of Signal Processing and Neural Networks Society IEEE, as well as referee for several journals of the Institute of Physics (London, UK), Neural Networks (Elsevier), IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, and evaluator/expert for the ISMRM, OHBM, ARACIS, CNCSIS, UEFISCDI, The Romanian – U.S. Fulbright Commission. and the European Commission (FP7, H2020). He published over 100 scientific papers, 12 monographs, and contributed with chapters in other 10 text books. He contributed to more than 150 scientific meetings with posters and oral presentations, seminars, invited and plenary lectures, as well as acting as organizer, chairman, and keynote speaker.
